Although the full details of the blend remains a guarded secret, since its launch in 2009 we have detailed some of the key Single Malts that make up the 100% Malt Whisky blend of Big Peat. Each shown to represent the spirit of the individual Distilleries we source from.

The challenge in the blend was to balance all the classic characteristics of an Islay Whisky. And, to retain a balanced PPM level (40 Parts Per Million), we wanted to select a combination of both heavily and lightly peated Malts.

With Caol Ila spirit bringing sweetness, Bowmore the perfect balance, Ardbeg a medicinal, earthy quality and Port Ellen, a degree of elegance, Big Peat represents all 
that is Islay in a bottle. Typically Islay in flavour, the palate carries notes of ash, sweet tar, smoking chimneys and a subtle salty beach quality, with a long and lingering phenolic finish. As the first ever Big Peat Christmas Edition finished in sherry casks, this special release truly encapsulates the flavour of Christmas in a bottle. BIG and BOLD… it’s the ultimate winter warmer and is sure to get you in the festive spirit!

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Anticipate hints of dried fruit, cocoa, and spiced oak

Taste: Then comes candied peel alongside Hebridean sea air, peated barley, and ‘his’ signature smoke! Notes of earthy smoke, leather, dry ash, heather honey

Finish: Smoke & Oaky vanilla that linger in the finish.
Casks used: Our Hogsheads are a 50/50 split of first and second-fill – an important detail as this helps not to overwhelm the intense smoky characteristics of the new-make Islay spirit with too much sweet influence from the wood // Sherry cask finished
